Board Of Governance
PURPOSE
The Board of Governors is the governing body of the Institution. It has overall responsibility for the organisation’s funding, strategic direction and management. It advises the Executive Director/Committee with respect to the overall direction and specific matters to ensure that the Institution achieves its Mission
FUNCTIONS
The functions of the Board of Governors are to:
- Overseeing the pursuit of the Mission of the Institute;
- Provide advice to the Executive Director/Committee regarding the overall operations of the College from a strategic perspective Monitor the implementation of the Institute’s Strategic Plan;
- Oversee and monitor the overall quality of the Institute’s operations; Oversee the Academic Board;
- Confer academic awards;
- Establish any necessary committee to meet the Institute’s requirements; and
- Initiate reviews and improvements in all operational areas (including governance)

Ethics Committee
Role
The role of the Ethics Committee is to review and approve student and staff research proposals, and establishing protocols for the ethical conduct of research at the Institute
Function
The functions of the Ethics Committee are to:
- Assess the implications of all student human research project proposals;
- Monitor student research projects until completion to ensure that students continue to conform to the approved protocol;
- Maintain a record of all proposed research projects; and
- Monitor and advise on the Institute policy and protocol on human research and related procedures.
Membership and meeting protocols
(a) Chair person;
(b) at least one member who is a lay person, who has no affiliation with the Institute, is not currently involved in medical, scientific, or legal work and who is from the community in which the Institute is located;
(c) at least one member with knowledge of, and current experience in, the areas of research that are considered by the Institute;
(d) at least one member with knowledge of, and current experience in, the professional care, counselling or treatment of people (eg social worker, clinical psychologist);
The Chair person of the Ethics Committee is the Institute Director.
Current Membership
At present the Ethics committee is in formation as suitable members are being invited. For present purposes, the Ethics Committee of the Institute of Mental Health at the University of Wollongong has agreed to act as the Ethics Committee for the Institute until such time as the Institute has assembled a properly constituted Ethics Committee that conforms to the above terms of reference.External Course Advisory Committee
Role
The role of the Course Advisory Committee is to provide, as needed, the Institute's Board of Governance with industry specific and academic advice and guidance in the on-going review and modification of the Institute's courses
Function
The functions of the Course Advisory Committee are to:
- Regularly review the units and programs offered by the Institute and advise on possible improvements and initiatives
- Review educational benchmarking exercises;
- Monitor graduate outcomes and the nature of Institute graduates;
- Monitor student outcomes against relevant Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) levels;
- Review new courses new and revised units within existing courses and endorse approval to the Board of Governance;
- Draw to the attention of the Board of Governance recent developments and trends in related fields of study and research and directions in course development;
- Receive and comment upon the Course Quality Report compiled from the unit reviews, resource audit, benchmarking report, moderation and validation results and student performance data acquired during the Quality cycle of curriculum review..
Membership of Course Advisory Committee
The committee consists of:
- an independent Chair person;
- at least 3 other independent externals with relevant expertise (including academics and representatives from professional associations);
- the Director.
Current Membership
The ECAC is convened every 5 years and so does not have a standing membership. \
Teaching & Learning Committee
Role
The Teaching and Learning Committee is responsible for the achievement of the College educational goals.
Functions
The functions of the Teaching and Learning Committee are to:
- Recommend new policies and amendments to existing policies to the Board of Governance;
- Develop and implement the annual professional development plan for lecturers;
- Make recommendations to the Board of Governance on changes to existing courses;
- Review outcomes from student feedback;
- Monitor student outcomes;
- Review student results and report to the Board of Governance;
- Establish curriculum development task groups on a needs basis to develop new courses;
- Provide advice on outcomes of College surveys/feedback including: -
- student surveys;
- graduate/alumni surveys;
- employer feedback; and
- professional association feedback;
- Any relevant tasks and activities specially referred to the Teaching and Learning Committee by the Board of Governance.
Membership and meeting protocols
The Committee consists of:
- The Institute Director
- 2 staff representatives
- A Student Representative.
